Chemistry is often referred to as “the central science” because of its pivotal role in all sciences dealing with the matter, including biology, physics, psychology, engineering, and medicine. As a chemistry major, you’ll take practical classes demonstrating chemistry’s relationship with other natural sciences and explore its applications in medicine, engineering, business, and law. You’ll get experience with modern laboratory equipment that will allow you to solve complex problems.
The Master of Science in Chemistry (thesis option) requires at least 30 approved hours, including at least 15 in chemistry and 6 in the thesis. Each student will defend his/her thesis in an oral examination. The teaching experience is considered an important part of the graduate training program. Each student on the MS track is required to participate in a minimum of 2, but usually no more than 4, semesters of teaching.
Our promise statement “Where open doors open minds” reflects our approach to education and scholarship. Namely, we are a college with world-class faculty who function as true teacher-scholars. College of Science & Engineering (CSE) faculty open our students' minds and engage in active scholarship, whether the subject is as large as the universe, as small as a sub-atomic particle, or as abstract as a mathematical theorem. Our goal is to propagate both knowledge and excitement to our students, whether in the classroom, our offices, research laboratories, or the field.
Your Texas Christian University (TCU) degree from the College of Science & Engineering will take you great places, and we’ll always be cheering you on. We are also much more than a conduit to a great job, graduate, or medical school – although these are well-traveled paths. This is because we are committed to the principles of diversity and equality, and we strive to make the College as inclusive as possible. Stated, we believe STEM education is hollow without these values inculcated firmly throughout.
