Program Description

You’ve made an impact in your field, now you’re ready to teach the next generation.

one not only with great job prospects, but also one that is rewarding and gives you the opportunity to serve your patients and community.

Program Description

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at Tennessee Wesleyan is designed for working adults who have decided to bring their skills and experience into the classroom.

MAT is an Initial Licensure program, providing college graduates who did not complete a traditional teacher education program the opportunity to earn their graduate degree and teaching license.

The MAT program offers the following licensure areas:

Special Education Interventionist (K-8)

Secondary Biology, Chemistry, or Mathematics (6-12)

Elementary Education (K-5)

Secondary Education and Elementary Education students complete a 36-semester hour program of study, with Special Education candidates completing 38 hours. Each program has a job-embedded track where TWU will waive the six-hour student teaching requirement if a student is currently in a teaching position.

Students can also take TWU MAT courses to receive their Special Education Endorsement.

One Saturday a Month

The TWU MAT program is offered in a hybrid format. Students complete the majority of their coursework online, with one meeting on campus each month.

The hybrid format accommodates professionals’ busy schedule, without sacrificing important face-to-face time with colleagues and professors.

About the School

Near the center of Athens, Tennessee, Tennessee Wesleyan University provides experiences one expects from a major university with the attention and nurturing a liberal arts education offers.

Since its founding in 1857, TWU has been dedicated to helping students live a meaningful life. Offering more than 30 undergraduate and graduate programs, students prepare for in-demand careers in industries like business, science, health professions, and education. Faculty and staff are dedicated to assisting students in the realization of their full potential through holistic and transformational learning experiences in the classroom, the field, and the community. A multitude of service-learning opportunities provides all TWU students the chance to grow as leaders and set a foundation for lifelong meaningful achievement.

As a part of the TWU family, the southeast Tennessee community plays an important role in the development of this region’s future leaders. The main campus is located two blocks from the town center, with easy access to the surrounding area. Additional locations in Knoxville and Cleveland provide convenience to students in the nursing program, management excellence degree completion program, and the new Master of Occupational Therapy program. In addition, some programs and classes are offered online. No matter where a student chooses to take their classes - they will find learning experiences and a supportive community to help them grow personally and professionally.

Through strong academic programs, service-learning opportunities, student organizations, and athletics, TWU helps students become enlightened servant leaders who believe in serving others, pursuing knowledge, and leading by example. Tennessee Wesleyan is a member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and features more than 20 athletic teams for men and women. In addition to athletics, students can participate in more than 25 clubs and student organizations, providing all students opportunities to grow their leadership skills and foster relationships with fellow classmates.
