If you enjoy studying science and have a strong passion for justice, SBU’s new forensic chemistry major may be the perfect fit for you! Studying forensic chemistry will give you a solid foundation in chemistry, while also teaching you how to apply chemistry principles to crime scene evidence testing.
Your forensic chemistry degree will equip you with problem-solving skills and hands-on laboratory training while helping you develop an understanding of crime scene investigation techniques, evidence collection and preservation, and the correlation between science and law enforcement.
A course in the instrumental analysis will teach you how to identify different substances and give you opportunities to practice forensic chemistry. Forensic chemistry majors at SBU also take a lab-based course in the analysis of evidence. A combination of chemistry and criminal justice classes will prepare you for a successful career in forensic chemistry.

Liberal arts schools provide both breadth and depth. Breadth is offered across the curriculum with coursework in the arts, sciences, and humanities, with the goal of preparing students for life. Depth is provided through the major, which focuses on preparation for work in a specific field. In a Christian liberal arts education, the Christian lens is the primary lens for learning. Breadth and depth in a Christian liberal arts setting also mean a focus on critical thinking so that non-Christian perspectives are examined (but not endorsed) and students are prepared to serve in secular careers and in service to Christ.
