The Southern Cross Bachelor of Biomedical Science is an exceptional foundation for a career in health. The degree provides you with an understanding of the structure and function of the human body and also the ways disease impacts health.

You will learn problem-solving skills and develop a clear understanding of the factors that help characterize the disease.

Graduates may qualify for entry into a range of postgraduate degrees such as pharmacy and physiotherapy, or choose to pursue medicine or a range of other careers in the health sector.

Career Opportunities

Graduates find positions in biomedical, health, university and government research; hospital, veterinary and pathology laboratories and scientific sales; quality assurance, health departments and pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Graduates may also pursue postgraduate studies in the medical field.

Professional Placement

The course structure includes 420 hours of professional placement for students to gain work experience in health and research facilities, such as pathology labs or medical research labs.

Major Areas of Study

This course enables students to gain knowledge and understanding of human health and the connection between disease processes and scientific laboratory investigations. Students can select units in biochemistry, human physiology, anatomy, immunology, neuroscience, microbiology, clinical bacteriology, health law and ethics, research methods, and other areas relevant to biomedical science.

Assessment methods

A variety of assessment methods is used in this course including multiple choice examinations, short answer and essay examinations, case studies, tutorial and workshop presentations, debates, written assignments, simulations and clinical skills testing.

Teaching methods

On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Our online study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students may receive a combination of a podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. In the latest Excellence in Research for Australia report, Southern Cross achieved outstanding ratings of 'at world standard' or above in 24 research fields. In nine research fields, the University was evaluated at the highest possible classification of 'well above world standard'. This was achieved in the fields of Geochemistry, Oceanography, Environmental Science and Management, Zoology, Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, Crop and Pasture Production, Forestry Sciences, Nursing, Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
