The Bachelor of Accounting will not only prepare you to develop a career as a CPA or Chartered Accountant; it will also enable you to understand challenging business situations from the inside out and develop strategic responses.

As a graduate of the Southern Cross Bachelor of Accounting program, you will use your skills in management accounting, statistical analysis, portfolio management and risk, and apply your strong understanding of professional ethics and sustainability.

Undertaking a Bachelor of Accounting will give you the capabilities to improve the financial health of an entity in a diverse range of fields.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to manage their own accounting practice. They may also typically find employment in areas such as financial and business advisory services, tax, business consulting, business planning, business valuations, employee relations, estate and trust planning, forensic accounting and sustainability strategy development.

Professional Recognition

Southern Cross University is fully accredited by the following professional bodies:

  • Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ)
  • CPA Australia
  • Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).

This accreditation will enable graduates to enroll in CAANZ, CPA Australia, and the IPA postgraduate programs. Subject to the choice of specific units, this degree fulfills the educational requirements for:

  • Registration as a BAS Agent and a Tax Agent by the Tax Practitioners Board
  • Financial advisers as determined by Australian Securities and Investments Commission Regulatory Guide 146 (RG146 Registration).

Major Areas of Study

The course includes core units in taxation, financial services, law, marketing and communication with elective units in advanced taxation, human resources, competitive strategy, business environment, and law.

Assessment methods

Assessment may be in the form of essays, reports, audio or video presentations, online quizzes, case analyses, and examinations.

Teaching methods

On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Our online study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students may receive a combination of a podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. In the latest Excellence in Research for Australia report, Southern Cross achieved outstanding ratings of 'at world standard' or above in 24 research fields. In nine research fields, the University was evaluated at the highest possible classification of 'well above world standard'. This was achieved in the fields of Geochemistry, Oceanography, Environmental Science and Management, Zoology, Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, Crop and Pasture Production, Forestry Sciences, Nursing, Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
