Program Description

The Master of Science in Applied Nanotechnology is unique in the Netherlands. The most distinguishing feature is its focus on the development of innovative micro- and nanotechnology-based products and applications. The fusion of elements from biology, chemistry, electrical engineering, and physics results in nanotechnological materials and devices with unprecedented properties. The program only starts in September and is taught entirely in English.

Ample Practical Experience

In addition to theory, our program is based on hands-on practice on various (production) techniques.

Excellent Facilities

Several well-equipped laboratories allow you to work with state-of-the-art technology.

No Pre-master Required

With a suitable Bachelor’s degree you can start directly with this Master's; there is no need for a pre-master.

Course Content

The master’s programme has a standard duration of two years and English is the operational language. The program provides you with a thorough basis in practical experience supported by appropriate theory. During the 2nd year, you'll be working on your master’s thesis project at a company. Upon graduation, you are entitled to use the title of Master of Science (MSc)

The First Year:

Theory, Practice, And A Project

The first semester of the year is mainly taken up by courses cementing the fundament of your (nanotechnological) knowledge. Subjects include mathematics, physical chemistry, and micro-/nano-engineering. In the third quarter, you are assigned an individual project on which you will be working until the end of the first year.

Nanotechnology In Twente

Twente is the ultimate nanotechnology hotspot in the Netherlands. The region boasts impressive facilities and know-how in this specific subject, including, but not limited to, research groups at both Saxion and the University of Twente. Both MESA+ and MIRA are recognized throughout the world as leading institutions with state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, the area offers excellent job opportunities within the field of micro- and nanotechnology.

Study Load

  • 70% Theory
  • 30% Practical and group work

Examples Of Projects Are:

  • E-nose Designing an electronic nose that can detect specific molecules selectively at extremely low concentrations. This sensor can subsequently be applied for instance in health care or the detection of illegal explosives.
  • Sustainable and Circular Electronics Lifetime Extension Technologies; using micro/nano sensors to monitor the health of sensitive electronic components in real life.
  • Lab-on-a-chip Designing a point-of-care test with which GPs can perform tests on patients needing a minimal amount of saliva.

About the School

Saxion University of Applied Sciences is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the Netherlands, with close to 27,000 students (and still growing!). Saxion has three campuses in the East of the Netherlands - one campus in each of the three Dutch cities of Deventer, Enschede and Apeldoorn. We are very proud of our diverse student body. Our international student population tops 2,500 students with a total of 95 different nationalities.

Great career prospects

Our campuses are located within the innovative heart of Europe, nesting innovative industries for more than 100 years. It is now housing startups and offers promising career prospects. Saxion’s way of teaching is closely bonded with the working field, which prepares you to enter tomorrow’s job market with the strongest professional skills. At Saxion we deploy problem-driven learning, and our study projects are developed in tight collaboration with the work field. You will learn through a practice-based approach and build practical experience. This type of education is specific to Universities of Applied Sciences (HBO in Dutch).

Excellent locations

Saxion is located in the Netherlands on three different campuses. All three Saxion campuses (located in the cities Enschede, Deventer and Apeldoorn) are within walking distance from the train station. The Dutch train network is excellent so it's easy to travel to and from Saxion, to other cities and even other countries! Saxion’s campuses are in areas where housing is cheaper and easier to find than in the rest of the Netherlands.

Affordable and accessible student housing

Our campuses are located in lively cities in the east of the Netherlands. This area provides a bubbly city life with more affordable and accessible housing compared to other student cities in the Netherlands. We also support and assist our international applicants in their search for their housing with webinars and other informational material.

A genuine second home

We understand that studying abroad can be a challenging experience, which is why our International Office offers a range of support services for our international students, starting right from the start! These include help with landing smoothly in the Netherlands and at Saxion, finding housing, applying for insurance and getting a Visa. Saxion is an open community for one and all, a genuine second home for our international students!
