The discipline is traditionally divided into cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, biological (or physical) anthropology, and archaeology. Of these, we emphasize cultural and linguistic anthropology here at Reed. Cultural and linguistic anthropology explore the astonishing range and variability of human practices past and present, paying particular attention to language, race, gender, sexuality, class, and (trans)nationalisms and providing frameworks for contextualizing and analyzing them.
Founded in 1908 in southeast Portland, Oregon, Reed colleges are a coeducational, independent liberal arts and sciences college. Referred to as one of the country's most intellectual colleges, Reed is known for its high standards of scholarly practice, creative thinking, and engaged citizenship.
Reed students pursue a bachelor of arts degree in 40 majors and programs. The curriculum includes a yearlong humanities course, broad distribution requirements, and a senior thesis. A 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio and small conference-style classes allow faculty members to mentor students and engage with them in individual discussions truly. Reed also offers a graduate program leading to a master of arts degree in liberal studies.
