This degree program focuses primarily on the major dimensions of Asian/Oriental Herbs and Acupuncture and their relationship with the field of integrative medicine.
In contrast to other Asian/Oriental herbal programs, the PIHMA herbal program is specifically designed for the Western learner. Rather than typical schools that teach single herbs in one year and formulas in the next year, requiring much rote memorization, the PIHMA herbal program emphasizes the analytical process of thinking like a herbalist by learning in the context of syndromes. Training begins with an overall picture of a syndrome and then addresses the formulas and single herbs related to it. This is compared to other herbal formulas, thus supporting the skill of formula modification and herb selection. The modern western mindset is to learn by doing, and PIHMA’s training supports this, supplementing the memorization process.
Students can expect:
A review of syndromes and practical diagnosis related to the herbs and formulas presented.
A thorough discussion of individual herbs and formulas, providing both practical and clinical use.
Major Asian patent formulas and American–made herbal products.
How to modify basic formulas according to the differentiation of symptoms and signs.
Case studies to illustrate and clarify through examples.
Home review exercises for optimal learning.
MSOM/DAcHM students complete over 900 hours of student acupuncture clinic and over 200 hours of student herbal clinic under a professional. Students are eligible to sit for the national certification exams in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine at successful completion.
