Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Education - Elementary Education program covers the education of children from grade 1 through grade 6 and leads to teaching certification. This degree requires a minimum of 120 total credit hours to graduate.

Concentrations

The student must have a total of at least 21 semester hours in an area of concentration (courses taken as part of the General Curriculum may be counted as part of the area of concentration). The area of concentration must be approved by the student’s advisor, and students should also plan the courses needed for the area of concentration with his or her advisor.

Available concentration areas:

  • Language Arts (additional endorsement in special education available)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Science and Mathematics
  • Art
  • Fine Art

Teacher Candidates seeking an additional endorsement in special education certification in K-12 Mild/Moderate Cross-Categorical Disabilities must take PS 121 Human Growth and Development instead of EDE 220. Because there are specific general education courses required for teacher certification in the state of Missouri, it is imperative the student speak with his or her advisor regarding these course requirements prior to enrollment.

Additional Endorsement in Special Education Certification

Elementary education teacher candidates who have an area of concentration in Language Arts may add an endorsement in Special Education (K-12 Mild/Moderate Cross-Categorical Disabilities) to their initial elementary education certification by taking the following courses and passing the appropriate Praxis II test (Mild/Moderate Cross-Categorical Disabilities, K-12).

About the School

Park, a four-year, private, nonprofit, liberal arts institution has helped students break barriers to education since 1875. Our motto, fides et labour (Latin for “faith and work”) is as relevant today as it was in the 19th century. A Park University education is an opportunity to find faith in yourself — by discovering your potential and working to realize it.

Park University’s core values are academic excellence, inclusivity and social responsibility. Diversity is in our DNA — Park’s first graduating class included four women. Today, we welcome more than 260 international students from 60 countries.
