Program Description

The Rural Teacher Education Pathway allows students from Lincoln County to complete the first two years of a Bachelor of Science in Education at Oregon Coast Community College and then transfer to Western Oregon University, with no loss of credit. Students pursuing Early Childhood/Elementary or Elementary/Middle School preparation pathways will transfer to Western Oregon University to complete the third year of study at WOU before returning to the Coast to complete their fourth year of study – including licensure and student teaching.

Teaching is one of the most rewarding yet challenging careers you can choose. Teachers make a difference in students' lives – to help them learn to read, solve a math problem, or discover how plants grow. Elementary and middle school instructors introduce students to the language, science, mathematics, social studies, the arts, and physical education. (Students interested in high school teacher transfer pathways should speak with their OCCC and Western Oregon University advisors.)

Overall employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is expected to increase over the next decade to replace an ageing teaching workforce. Science, math, special education, and bilingual teachers will be in great demand.

Oregon Coast Community College is committed to providing equal opportunities for students with disabilities throughout the College community. Students with documented disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations.

About the School

Oregon Coast Community College (OCCC) is here to serve Lincoln County’s students and the community. Students can complete the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at Oregon Coast, earn an associate degree, take courses to obtain employment, prepare to start a small business, learn English as a second language, or take personal enrichment courses. Students may explore career ideas, retrain or update job skills, pursue a personal interest, or broaden horizons. Students may attend full and part-time. Students may also take courses online.

Oregon Coast students are of all ages, from recent high school graduates to retirees. Students attend Oregon Coast for a variety of reasons: to update employment skills, to obtain an associate degree, to prepare for transfer to a bachelor’s degree program, to gain or refresh basic academic skills, or pursue personal cultural enrichment. Some attend credit classes full-time or part-time, while others take one or several non-credit classes. Many students combine school and work.
