Program Description

If you already have experience in the public sector, ODU's MPA program will provide you with the opportunity to enhance your professional knowledge, skills, and abilities to advance your careers. Even if you have little or no experience in these areas, you can build a foundation for future success with this degree. This program is designed to enhance your knowledge and competencies in five content areas:

  • Public management processes, including public budgeting and personnel systems;
  • Organizational design processes and behavior;
  • Political, legal, and ethical concepts and issues of public administration;
  • Quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques; and
  • Policy analysis and program evaluation.

ODU's Public Administration program is NASPAA accredited by the Commission on Peer Review & Accreditation.

Required Courses

  • 39 credit hours

You must complete a core curriculum of seven courses and six electives. Visit the department's website for more information regarding course requirements and descriptions. We also offer a certificate program in Public Procurement and Contract Management as a five-course elective series. Talk with an advisor to determine if you have credits that will transfer.

Online Learning Environment

Access course materials online from any location. Many classes don't have a scheduled meeting time so that you can fit class into your schedule. The instructor may schedule assignments and exams at specific times. All courses follow ODU's regular academic calendar.
