The NSU music department will help you grow as a musician while preparing you to excel in your dream career as a music teacher.

As an NSU music major, you can learn to:

  • Teach music to K-12 students
  • Perform and create music, and
  • Develop students’ understanding and appreciation of the art of music.

The instrumental emphasis is for you if you’d like to teach K-12 instrumental music and supervise school music programs. You’ll be encouraged to take vocal courses to strengthen your musicianship.

The vocal emphasis prepares you to teach K-12 vocal and general music and supervise school music programs. You’ll be encouraged to take instrumental courses to strengthen your musicianship.

Our double major in music – instrumental and vocal – is perfect if you’d like to teach in a smaller school district. With this degree, you’ll be qualified to teach grades K-12.

You'll have plentiful performance opportunities as part of outstanding musical ensembles. NSU brings professional musicians to campus for residencies, workshops, lectures and recitals. Northern ensembles that tour each year include the Marching Wolves, Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers.

NSU is a fully accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).

About the School

Northern also offers a comprehensive and highly successful athletics program, sponsoring 15 NCAA Division II intercollegiate varsity sports that compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NSIC), with a supportive fan base and game-day experience that is second to none. You will also enjoy a full college experience in an environment committed to your success in fine and performing arts, student organizations, and intramurals, and by participating in a vibrant schedule of events on campus, study abroad opportunities, and engaging in the wonderful community.
