The Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science (BCES) is focused on providing our students with the skill sets they need to succeed!
With modern research laboratories managed by our faculty and an emphasis on the natural laboratories provided by the beautiful environments of northern New Mexico, we promote a stimulating learning environment that includes research experience in the lab and the field.
We offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with an optional focus in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology or Molecular and Cell Biology, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, with an optional focus in Natural Resource Management or Environmental Monitoring. Associate of Science degrees are also offered in Biology, Environmental Science, and Chemistry. These Associate Programs are designed to prepare students to pursue Baccalaureate Degrees, and transfer to four-year programs, either here at NORTHERN or other colleges and universities.
We also have Associate of Applied Science Programs in Wildland Fire Science, Radiation Protection, Viticulture, and Enology, as well as Certificate Programs in Wildlife Fire Science, Radiation Control Technician, Environmental Monitoring, Viticulture, and Enology. These programs are specifically designed to channel students into career paths in Federal Agencies or Industry.
Northern New Mexico College recognizes and incorporates the place-based uniqueness of northern New Mexico into academics and campus life. Northern's communities of service are deeply tied to the region, a fact that influences both the educational choices of our students and the ways in which we serve them.
We primarily serve rural communities within a 40-mile radius of our main campus in Española, New Mexico, including eight Native American communities, within one of the most underserved regions in the state. NORTHERN employs more than 40 experienced, full-time faculty and 22 full-time PhD faculty. Classes are small and personal. Average class sizes at NORTHERN range from 12-15 students, allowing you to get personal, one-on-one instruction from faculty.
