Biology is one of the fastest-growing areas of science. Biologists today use innovative ideas and revolutionary technologies to solve complex problems in our world.
The Millikin Biology Program exposes students to the broad scope and diversity of modern biology, which they can use to develop careers in the life sciences. Students can participate in research, internships and directed studies, and many gain valuable experiences as biology department laboratory assistants. The biology department is housed in the Leighty Tabor Science Center, a state-of-the-art facility in 2002. Our faculty offices are located there, as well as several new laboratories and a greenhouse.
Biology majors benefit from a variety of career options. Research and teaching in high school or college are popular opportunities. Students in the pre-professional program may go into medicine, dentistry, optometry or veterinary medicine. Programs also are available for students interested in pre-physical/occupational therapy or pre-medical technology, molecular/cell biology, and environmental biology.
Millikin is an independent, four-year university that is privately funded and has an enrollment of approximately 2,200 students in traditional and non-traditional undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Located in Decatur, Illinois, you will quickly discover that the signature of a Millikin education is a unique experience we like to call Performance Learning. Since its founding more than 110 years ago, Millikin has operated under the philosophy of providing an education that combines theory with practice. While this was a radical idea at the time, we know today that practice is not enough. Today's students must perform their knowledge in order to be truly prepared for a successful career after college. Through immersive experiences such as internships, co-teaching, running a business, presenting research to experts, and performing in front of audiences – students find new ways to live out their learning and reap the rewards of their hard work.
