Program Description

The PA Medicine Program at Michigan State University offers a 27-month, 108-credit curriculum leading to the degree of Master of Science in PA Medicine. The curriculum allows PA students to team with other health professionals during both their didactic and clinical training experiences. Students are challenged to meet the needs of an ever-changing healthcare marketplace while learning a collaborative approach to medical care.

PA students will learn and work closely with MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine students and will be introduced to osteopathic medical philosophy in order to have a broader, more holistic approach to patient care. At the start of the program, 48% of the didactic curriculum (29 of the 60 didactic credit hours) for the PA Medicine students will be taught interprofessionally with the D.O. medical students. The curriculum includes four semesters of classroom and laboratory courses, and three semesters of clinical supervised practical experience courses.

About the School

In 1964, osteopathic physicians, working in cooperation with the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, were successful in obtaining a charter to establish an osteopathic medical college in Michigan. The original Michigan College of Osteopathic Medicine was located in Pontiac and admitted its first students in 1969. Today, more than 300 osteopathic students graduate each year as part of our mandate to produce primary care physicians for the state. The college also receives more research funding from the National Institutes of Health than any other osteopathic college in the nation.

Our mission is to provide world-class, osteopathic, student-centered graduate and medical education and research in order to foster community access to patient-centered medical care, and our vision is to prepare physicians in the science of medicine, the art of caring and the power of touch, with a world view open to all people.
