The Master of Science in Emergency Management (MSEM) program is designed to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to implement both proactive and reactive strategies to reduce the cost of a disaster in life and property and thus to be successful emergency managers and leaders in both the public and private sectors. The program’s graduates will possess the problem-solving capabilities to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate disasters and emergencies. The program provides a multi-disciplinary approach requiring a core set of courses ad-dressing issues common to virtually all hazards and courses addressing special topics, including public health and transportation security.
The Academy’s Learn-Do-Learn philosophy promotes learning both inside and outside the classroom. Experiential learning courses and co-ops allow cadets to gain practical knowledge in their fields in the United States and abroad. Scroll our gallery to view our offerings.
USTS Kennedy
All Aboard for a Semester at Sea
Sea Term is a six-week, hands-on voyage. Cadets enrolled in Marine Engineering and Marine Transportation must complete at least four Sea Terms— or “semesters at sea” — that typically takes place in January and February between academic terms.
Sea Term affords cadets the opportunity to rotate through class and laboratory training. This training ranges from ship operations, maintenance, watch standing, to drills.
First-year students sleep in holds with dozens of their shipmates while upper-class cadets live in smaller holds. The various ports of call offer time to relax and unwind. The T.S. Kennedy sails to U.S. and foreign ports of the Caribbean Sea — including the transit of the Panama Canal and an equatorial crossing. Setting sail presents opportunities to develop independence and self-confidence. All majors may have the opportunity to participate in a Sea Term pending space availability and their goals within their specific major.
