Program Description

Our Analytical Chemistry MSc programme is designed to provide comprehensive training in analytical chemistry and its implementation in a variety of fields including biomedical, pharmaceutical, food and environmental analysis.

Analytical chemists assess the chemical structure and nature of substances. Their skills are needed for a variety of purposes including drug development, forensic analysis and toxicology. Analytical chemists can specialise in areas as varied as toxicology, pharmaceuticals and forensics.

What does an analytical chemist do?

Analytical chemists analyse samples using a range of techniques such as electro-chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, and spectroscopy. They are employed by a variety of public and private sector organisations and can specialise in areas such as toxicology, pharmaceuticals, quality control or forensics.

You will have access to a broad range of scientific instrumentation including: 400 MHz, 500 MHz, solid-state and benchtop NMR spectrometers, single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers, a high resolution inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer, GC-MS and linear ion trap LC-mass spectrometers, ion mobility spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatography and tunable nanopore sensors.

Our MSc Chemistry programmes attract students from all over the world with students from a wide range of different countries including China, Nigeria, Oman, USA, UK, Brunei, Latvia and India. Our programmes were ranked above the sector average on all 9 units of assessment in the 2016 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey.

What makes this programme different?

  • Access to a broad range of scientific instrumentation
  • New £17 million STEMLab

About the School

Here at Loughborough we take pride in offering an experience and creating a community that you can be proud to be a part of. That’s why we have been named University of the Year at the Whatuni? Student Choice Awards 2020. The Awards are based on reviews and ratings made by current students across the UK, so winning this award shows that our students are extremely satisfied with the services and experience we provide them with.

This isn’t the first time we’ve won the prestigious accolade either. We were also named University of the Year by the WhatUni? Awards in 2015 and again in 2018. We’ve also been named University of the Year in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide twice.
