Program Description

Provide quality healthcare to an active population with a bachelor’s in kinesiology and master’s in athletic training. In Loras’s unique 3 + 2 Athletic Training program, you’ll develop the knowledge, skills, and professional rapport necessary for a strong clinical practice.

Earn your master’s within 5 years in this CAATE-accredited program and be ready to sit for the Board of Certification exam.

Student Experience

As an Athletic Training 3 + 2 student, you’ll become an active learner, responsible contributor, and reflective thinker who can provide exceptional healthcare through quality instruction and clinical athletic training experiences.

Earn Both Your Bachelor’s and Master’s in 5 Years

Complete the majority of the kinesiology major requirements during the first three years of study. You’ll benefit from expert faculty as well as a variety of partnerships with healthcare providers, high schools, and local businesses in a program that has had an accredited athletic training major since 2003. In your fourth year, you will then begin the graduate portion of your studies where you’ll gain hands-on experience, engaging clinical rotations, and developmental research opportunities (while still paying only undergraduate tuition costs).

Frequently Asked Questions

Who made the decision to change the level of the degree?

The Athletic Training Strategic Alliance consisting of the Board of Directors of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and the Commissioners of the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) with the support of the Board of Certification (BOC) and the NATA Foundation have jointly acted to establish a master’s-level degree as the professional degree for athletic training.

Will the educational content change?

The degree change is part of a broader vision to produce providers who are prepared to meet the challenges our patients will face in the future. The educational content will also evolve to provide our students and, ultimately, their patients with healthcare knowledge and skills that produce a provider who can function as a mid-level (Level II) provider (i.e., physical therapist, nurse practitioner, occupational therapist).

When do classes begin?

The Loras M.A.T. program is presented in a cohort format that begins each summer.

What undergraduate major would I receive in the 3+2 program?

A Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology

Catholic identity: our commitment to the Catholic intellectual tradition

Loras College is a Catholic, diocesan college explicitly oriented to promote service of both church and world through encouraging all members of the community in development of their “diverse professional, social and religious roles.” The college strives to be a community demonstrating the highest standards of the Catholic intellectual tradition and welcoming all people into a dialogue to promote core values of truth, respect, responsibility, excellence and service.

Diversity Matters

  • Diversity matters at Loras College because we are an inclusive community of people from many backgrounds and experience
  • We, the Loras College community, strive to embody social, intellectual, and cultural hospitality in which multiple points of view can be expressed and explored in civil discourse.
  • We proclaim this vision as an institution rooted in the Catholic tradition, which centers its moral vision of society on human dignity. All human persons have inherent dignity because all are created in the image of God; thus we act to treat all persons with respect.
  • We aspire to be a society grounded in truth, justice, charity, and freedom. As neighbors in solidarity with one another, we work for fair treatment of all persons.
  • We desire to live out our conviction that authentic unity is rooted in and springs forth from our diversity and therefore strive to create opportunities to embrace and build active community relationships in which all individuals may flourish.
  • We intend the expression of our diversity ideals to be fluid and constantly evolving. As a result of our continued engagement with these values, our lived experience of diversity is not static, but a dynamic and living testament to human dignity.
