Learning to understand and enjoy music builds a vast array of skills that benefits every student. While most music students do not go on to become professional performers, the experience of learning an instrument, performing in a band or choir, and enjoying the challenges and camaraderie as part of these experiences in school, make music education very rewarding.
Indiana University’s music education program is administered through the world-famous Jacobs School of Music.
Your music course work will be taught by Jacobs School of Music professors, but you will take education course work that is collaboratively offered by both the Jacobs School of Music and the IU School of Education.
For nearly a century, we have been known for our excellence in performance, artistry, and collaboration—but most of all, for our belief in the inherent value of a creative life.
We have helped launch the careers of countless performers, scholars, and music educators who have become leaders around the globe.
Our more than 1,500 students come from all 50 states and as many as 55 countries. Each one benefits from the intensity and focus of a world-class conservatory combined with the broad academic offerings of a major university.
