Getting Down to the Grass Roots

Humber’s Bachelor of International Development is an interdisciplinary degree that provides you with a solid theoretical foundation in international development studies and its related disciplines, as well as professional and technical skills in development management. The program is designed specifically to bridge the gap between theory and practice by building hands-on project management skills and capabilities. The program fosters a comparative understanding of developed and developing countries through directed study, analytical research and opportunities to travel, gaining cross-cultural learning experiences.

Your core courses, in which you’ll develop professional competencies, include four streams: international development studies, supplementary disciplines, management skills and research skills.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
    • Grade 11 or 12 Mathematics (MCR3U, MCF3M, MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent) minimum 60 per cent. (Students who do not possess Grade 11 or Grade 12 Math at the U or M level, or who have achieved a grade below 60 per cent may be considered for admission. The student will be required to successfully complete a math equivalency course during their first year at Humber. Additional course fees will apply.)
    • Four Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
    • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent

  • Mature student status

or

  • College or university transfer status

All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

Selection: Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Work Placement

The 14-week/490 hours work placement is from May to August following semester six. A placement advisor will help you find a position that fits your academic and career goals. Students are also strongly encouraged to participate in career management workshops to develop successful job search skills.

International project manager, international logistics manager, international program coordinator, rural or northern community development officer, international program development officer, grant writer, researcher – these are all careers you can pursue as a graduate of Humber’s Bachelor of International Development program. The program ensures you will have the necessary skills and tools to work in a wide variety of international organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank or Asian Development Bank; non-governmental organizations like World Vision, CESO|SACO, Save the Children Canada and Right to Play; government agencies such as the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD); entrepreneurship or economic development agencies; and businesses that focus on international development and management including Agriteam Canada and Whyte Reynolds International.

The 2016/2017 fee for two semesters is
