Our Program

Humber’s Bachelor of Commerce – Accounting degree program will help you develop skills in the applied aspects of the profession. Introductory courses provide a fundamental understanding of a variety of business disciplines along with their functions and relationships. Upper-year courses provide a more in-depth study of accounting. Elective courses available in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences will enrich and extend your academic experience. The program emphasizes critical thinking, analytical skills, communications, and leadership. Areas of study include marketing, law, economics, operations management, ethics, human resources management, organizational behavior, financial accounting, management accounting, financial management, taxation, audit, strategic management, and statistics and quantitative analysis.

You will have the opportunity to train in Humber’s state-of-the-art Accounting Centre, where you’ll learn about best practices in accounting and use standard industry software such as Simply Accounting.

What You Will Learn

Common Platform Years 1 and 2

This program is one of eleven Bachelor of Commerce degrees built on a common two-year platform of business studies that gives students the time to decide their specialty. In years one and two, students learn the fundamentals of business, including accounting, business law, information systems, e-commerce, financial management, HR management, and marketing. At the end of year two, students make their decision and spend their final two years specializing in their chosen business field.

Work Placement

Students will participate in one mandatory full semester of paid work, for 14 weeks/490 hours, in the fall semester of the 4th year of study. Students will select from a wide variety of opportunities in public accounting firms, government offices, not-for-profit organizations, major corporations, small businesses, and financial institutions. Students can work for employers in accounting practices, in the industry (insurance, banks, manufacturing or service industries), non-profit organizations or for all levels of government. These employers can range from large multinationals to small proprietorships.

Accounting Centre

The Accounting Centre is a resource available to all students enrolled in accounting courses. Students provide assistance with textbook concepts, homework questions and an overall understanding of course material from 1st to 6th semester.

Professional Accreditation, Endorsement, and Recognition

Humber's Bachelor of Commerce - Accounting meets the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) course requirements. As well, Humber's Bachelor of Commerce - Accounting qualifies graduates to write the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) of Ontario entrance examination. The Certified General Accountants (CGA) of Ontario requires graduates of Humber's Bachelor of Commerce - Accounting to enroll in additional CGA-specific courses as part of their membership requirements. All professional accounting associations are independent of Humber, all have additional requirements for membership beyond holding a degree, and all may change their requirements at any time.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 percent
    • Grade 12 Mathematics (MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent) minimum 60 percent (Students who do not possess Grade 12U Mathematics or who have achieved a grade below 60 percent may be considered for admission. Students will be required to complete a math equivalency course during their first semester at Humber. Additional course fees will apply.)
    • Four Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
    • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 percent

  • Mature student status

or

  • College or university transfer status

All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

Selection: Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Cost & Fees

The 2016/2017 fee for two semesters is

  • domestic $7,446.54
  • international $14,800.

Amounts listed are the total of tuition, lab and material fees, student service and auxiliary fees for the first two semesters of the 2016/2017 academic year. Fees are subject to change.
