Program Description

The Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice within the Department of Sociology is designed to provide local, state, national, and international leadership in the broader area of crime and justice. The department is recognized as a prominent center of research, scholarship, and teaching, with academic, theoretical, and direct policy relevance. The department is recognized both nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of Criminal Justice and Criminology education.

Students declaring this major must have at least a minimum of 2.0 cumulative grade point average at Hampton University and earn a “C” or above in all courses in the major (required or elective) attempted at this University. To receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Criminology from Hampton University, majors must complete a total of 123 credit hours. Students who have met the University Core Curriculum or the General Education lower division requirements will qualify for admission to the program (meeting these requirements will not guarantee admission to the program). Transfer credits count toward the major and must have a grade of “C” or better.

Study Abroad Opportunities

Each year students in the Department of Sociology, along with students from other departments, are provided the opportunity to participate in a faculty-led study abroad trip. Professor Idonia Barrett has coordinated numerous trips to exciting places around the world through EF College Study Tours. Over the years, Professor Barrett has taken students to Cuba, London, Paris, and Amsterdam. Students are immersed in the local culture whereby daily they interact with citizens of that particular country for approximately nine days. The purpose of the study-abroad trips is to expose students to different world cultures, legal systems, and social & human organizations.

Hampton University has the privilege of having the first and only NASA mission that is 100% led by an HBCU (Historically Black College & University). It is also the home of the largest and most advanced Proton Therapy Institute in the world.

Hampton University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award certificates and degrees at the associate, baccalaureate, master’s, education specialist, professional, and doctoral levels.

The University is also approved by the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV). The University holds membership in the Council of Graduate Schools, the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, and the American Council on Education.

In addition, Hampton University (its undergraduate and/or graduate colleges) is accredited or approved by other bodies.
