Program Description

Presentation

Engineers trained at ESB are capable of using wood and other biosourced materials in an innovative way.

They master scientific and technical knowledge, lead teams and manage projects. They use new technologies and place their approach in a logic of circular economy.

The realization of projects, collaborative and interdisciplinary work associated with experimentation on a scale of 1, constitute a strong singularity of the ESB engineering program.

Objectives

ESB engineers are trained to promote wood and biosourced materials .

Aware that these materials are the answer to environmental and societal challenges , they are committed to designing and building a sustainable future.

Leaders of the teams they supervise, ESB engineers rely on their scientific and technical knowledge and their managerial skills to successfully complete the projects they manage.

Specialists in bio-based materials, they use new technologies and proven methods to make choices with optimized impacts.

They are able to put innovation into the processes for which they are responsible, in a broad spectrum of activity sectors (construction, transport, capital goods).

Sensitive to market expectations, they are able to imagine uses and services to make life easier for users.

The sense of the concrete and the collective is developed on the basis of full-scale projects and experiments ... so many singularities which characterize the ESB engineering program

State recognition

The ESB is accredited by the Engineering Qualifications Commission (CTI) to issue the engineering diploma.

The diploma benefits from the EUR-ACE label which validates the conformity of the training with European standards.

Obtaining the ESB engineering diploma confers the master's degree (bac+5).

Organization

Lessons and scenarios

The training is organized around the succession of teaching periods devoted to a subject then periods of implementation.

  • The teaching periods (ENS) correspond to the contribution of knowledge provided in Teaching Units (EU). The lessons can take different forms: courses, practical work, tutorials ... face to face or distance (e-learning).
  • Scenario periods (MES) allow the application of lessons through case studies, projects or workshops. In the case of apprenticeship, the scenarios are carried out in the host companies (ENT).

Individualization of training

Allowing students to individualize their path is a strong axis of the training program.

During schooling, students choose:

  • elective lessons,
  • a second living language,
  • the subjects of certain projects which are left to the initiative of the students,
  • a minor and a major (specialized UE sets) to affirm the professional project,
  • a 2nd minor which will enrich the training profile.
  • the possibility of doing a gap year or a semester with an ESB partner.

The international

Each student-engineer must carry out an international mobility of at least 8 weeks during their schooling.

For students, it is carried out in different ways: internship, semester of study in one of the 38 partner establishments or even a double diploma (Russia, Chile, Switzerland or Brazil).

For apprentices, international mobility takes the form of a company mission at the end of semester 6.

Insertion and placement

Upon graduation, graduates invest in many sectors of activity: construction, housing products, capital goods, environment.

There are many challenges for engineers who wish to imagine, design and deploy innovative solutions that meet the needs of our society in a sustainable manner.

Situation after graduation

Situation of young graduate engineers 4 months after their exit.

  • First job found before leaving school: 76%
  • First job found in less than 2 months: 89%
  • Jobs based abroad: 13%
  • Current jobs found in the host company of the apprenticeship contract (apprentice engineers only): 56%
  • Current jobs from the end of study internship (face-to-face engineers only): 50%
  • Median gross annual salary including bonuses and benefits in France: € 35,800

About the School

Our vision

Exploring, designing, prototyping, and testing are at the heart of our training approach. The implementation of projects, along with collaborative and interdisciplinary work combined with scale-1 experimentation, are unique features of our science and technology school which fosters a culture and spirit of ‘makers’.

We are convinced that the planet’s resources provide endless opportunities to protect itself and help build a sustainable future. So ESB has made this vision part of its identity, to train future engineers and technicians in the field of wood and biosourced materials.

Our vocation: Explore nature, create a sustainable future

ESB was founded in 1934 at the initiative of the French Ministries of Agriculture, National Education and Industry and is one of the French leading higher education institutions specialized in wood sciences en technologies. Committed to innovating with wood and biosourced materials, the school has broadened this vision to each of its areas of expertise: training, research, and R&D engineering at the service of companies.

In a context of environmental challenges, wood and biosourced materials are up-and-coming resources to invent a sustainable future. Natural and renewable, these plant-based materials are allies of the circular economy.

Educational programs and degrees

ESB is a nonlucrative private higher education and research institution, recognized and supported by academic and scientific authorities. The school is involved in various networks and is known across France and internationally.

We train engineers and technicians in wood sciences and bio-sourced materials: BTS (vocational training certificate), Bachelor’s, Professional Bachelor’s Degree, Master Engineering Degree, Specialised Master’s, Ph.D.

International relations: Opening up to the world

Open to the world, ESB diversifies and expands its international identity and opening by welcoming students from all over the world and providing opportunities for all to study abroad thanks to the various partnerships it has established over the last 20 years.

The international dimension is fundamental in training and projects, enabling the students to acquire technical, linguistic and intercultural skills.

Nantes: A European innovative Metropolis

Recognized as the green capital in 2013 and the capital of innovation in 2019, Nantes is a city where it is pleasant to study, to blossom and to create.

Nantes hold plenty of cultural and sporting events. The region also has a dynamic job market with great opportunities for young graduates.

ESB is ideally located in the heart of the green campus of the Chantrerie, between urban abundance and quiet parks.
