Program Description

Analyze the possibilities of a future in Chemistry.

Chemists make the stuff of modern life - plastics, composites, pharmaceuticals, microelectronics, nanomaterials and so much more. The career possibilities are endless. You can get off to a great start with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.

At Edinboro, you will follow a rigorous curriculum founded on evidence-based science. You’ll thrive in small-size lectures and labs taught by faculty, not graduate assistants. As you work alongside them and participate in their research, they will become your mentors. They will also train you in the use of modern instrumentation for the analysis and production of biomolecules and prepare you for valuable internships that will enhance your skills and build your resume.

Key outcomes of the Chemistry program include the ability to think critically, apply analytical and logical skills to problem-solving, understand current social and ethical issues related to chemical science, apply core knowledge, theories and practices of chemistry and communicate technical information in a professional manner.

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program at Edinboro is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), and students who meet the criteria will obtain an ACS certified degree.

When you graduate, you will be well prepared to pursue a graduate degree in Chemistry or related science or find employment in a variety of industries, including chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, quality control, government research or education. This high-caliber program is also an excellent foundation for medical school.

Modern Facilities

Fighting Scots live, work, and play in state-of-the-art facilities on EU’s picturesque 585-acre campus. Located just 20 miles south of Erie, Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city, Edinboro is bustling with exciting activities.

Learn to operate state-of-the-art scientific instruments.

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program at Edinboro is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS), and students who meet the criteria will obtain an ACS certified degree.

State-of-the-art facilities give you a competitive edge.

If equipment such as atomic absorption spectrophotometers, Carl Zeiss polarimeters, fluorimeters, and electrolyte analyzers get your heart pumping, you will enjoy every minute in the Cooper Science Center. A $32 million expansion offers you plenty of opportunities for hands-on experience with high-tech analytical instruments. It’s not just fun and fascinating to use these devices, but the experience will give you an advantage in your professional career. The newest instruments in the Department of Chemistry include:

  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer - The Bruker BioSpin Avance III HD 400 system is the most sensitive, most accurate, highest performance NMR spectrometer in the market today. With robust, automated and intuitive software, it is ideal for both the teaching lab and research.
  • GC-MS QP2010 Ultra - A new Shimadzu Corporation modal QP2010 Ultra replaces our older gas chromatography-mass spectrometer systems, providing students and faculty with the most widely used and powerful tools for chemical analysis.

Evidence of graduate success.

Most graduates of our program go on to successful careers in the chemical industry. Some continue their studies in graduate chemistry programs or pharmacy school, while others become high school teachers. Here are a few examples of where our alumni are now:
