Program Description

The Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Level 3 Course is available to learners 16+ who are interested in working within a school, particularly in the role of a Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant.

The course aims to enable learners to understand the roles and a responsibility of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools, and provides an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively and in a self-directed way.

It also prepares learners to support the Teacher and the delivery of the curriculum within a school, as well as developing skills to help children and young people to develop self-esteem, independence and skills for learning.

The course seeks to further develop professional and technical skills and knowledge, and an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school environment.

This course provides successful students with a qualification listed on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Database with 32 credits.

PLEASE NOTE : A work placement within a school environment of at least 50 hours is required to complete this option

The Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools aims to provide progression to the NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and also provides progression into employment. Learners may also progress to achieve HLTA status.

This is a competency-based qualification suitable for all roles in schools, including site staff, administrators etc as well as those who work directly with children and young people.

It seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding that all those working in a school setting will need and covers areas such as safeguarding, communication and understanding the school context.

The Course Covers the Following 11 Mandatory Units:

  • Unit 1: Understand Child and Young Person Development. (L/601/1693)
  • Unit 2: Understand How to Safeguard the Wellbeing of Children and Young People. (Y/601/1695)
  • Unit 3: Support Children and Young People's Health and Safety. (D/601/1696)
  • Unit 4: Engage in personal development in young people's settings. (A/601/1429)
  • Unit 5: Support learning activities. (F/601/4073)
  • Unit 6: Promote children and young people's positive behaviour. (A/601/4069)
  • Unit 7: Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults. (H/601/4065)
  • Unit 9: Support assessment for learning. (A/601/4072)
  • Unit 10: Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults. (F/601/3327)
  • Unit 11: Schools as organisations. (A/601/3326)

Prerequisites

There are no particular entry requirements, although you cannot complete this course unless you have a suitable placement for collecting your work-based evidence for the course assignments.

Course Duration & Support

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the course is the self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.

Assessment

Students are required to compile a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates their learning against each of the assessment criteria of the course. Portfolios are assessed by a tutor. Some portfolio evidence will need to be witnessed by a competent person in the workplace hence students must be employed in a school or arrange and complete a work experience placement.
