The Film and Television course of our university focus on the numerous steps involved in a production - from the idea to the finished contribution.
This Bachelor program teaches the required theoretical basics, such as film history, film analysis, scriptwriting, film and video technology as well as audio technology. The practical components emphasize the methods and techniques of filmmaking and television production. An interactive and hands-on study approach form the focus in all our Film and Television courses. Aside from basic scientific and technical knowledge, students will also acquire comprehensive practical experience.
After the basic courses, students can choose one of the available specializations: directing, cinematography, production, post-production or sound design. They also write, film, edit and produce their first short films, documentaries, music videos and similar film and television contributions from early on with supervision and assistance from our lecturers who are themselves working in the creative sector. The BA program is completed with a subject-related Bachelor thesis.
Directing
The study specialization directing teaches concepts and methods of dramaturgy, film history and image composition. The focus is on a deeper understanding and implementation of different artistic approaches.
Cinematography
The study specialization cinematography focuses on an intensive analysis of different aspects and the possibilities of (digital) camera-work. The conceptual, artistic and technical competencies necessary for the acquisition of images are studied. Assignments in various documentary and fictional formats are done in close cooperation with the directing and production students.
Production
Students who choose the study specialization production learn every step involved in a television or film production, starting from planning to implementation, e.g. professional calculation of production budgets and the financing of audio-visual projects, control tasks, (copyright) legal frameworks, organizational know-how and much more. Applicable job environments include production management, recording management, (creative) production or independent television and film production.
Post-production
In the specialization area post-production students focus on the technical and dramaturgical issues of classical film montage, such as the use of different editing techniques and tools. Besides this, they also learn to organize and manage digital data. Students gain insight into techniques to capture and process digital images. The objective is learning how to produce visual special effects and how to design unique picture worlds, layers, and backgrounds, for example for green screen shots or animated films. Suitable professions include cutters, digital image technicians (DIT), color graders, motion graphic designers, digital artists, and animation artists.
Sound design
The professional recording and processing of tones, sounds and noises are of central importance in the specialization area sound design. Students will become competent in the application of various forms of acoustics and sound. During the course of this practice-oriented specialization, the different occupational profiles in the audio production sector are taught, for example, the work of a sound engineer, sound designer or film mixer.
