Program Description

Maritime Law in DMU ranks first in China among all relevant programs in the field of maritime jurisprudence. This program cultivates legal professionals with the systematic legal knowledge to engage in legal work in port and shipping businesses, foreign-invested enterprises, legislative, administrative, judicial, arbitration agencies, and legal service organizations on the basis of the solid foundation of relevant laws and policies.

Program Objectives

This program aims at cultivating high-level, application-oriented, well-rounded and well-grounded legal professionals with solid foreign language foundation, systematic legal knowledge mastery, profound understanding of the shipping industry (international economy) and related business.

Career opportunities

Most graduates of maritime law work as lawyers, judges, procurators, inhouse-legal professionals, legal consultants, etc. Most of them have become elite legal professionals.

Curriculum Information

The main courses generally include Legal Philosophy, Chinese Law History, Constitution, Administrative Law and Administrative Litigation law, Introduction to Civil Law, Commercial Law, Intellectual Property Law, Economic Law, Criminal Law, Civil Procedural law, Public International Law, Private International Law,Introduction to International Economic Law,Admiralty Law, Law of Ships and Crew, Property Law of Ship, Liner Shipping Practice and Law, Charter Party Practice and Law, Marine Insurance Law, Practice and Law of International Shipping Agency, Maritime Procedure and Arbitration, Introduction to Navigation, Introduction to Marine Engine, etc.

About the School

Dalian Maritime University (DMU) is located in southwestern Dalian, which is a famous coastal city in northeastern China. The University covers an area of one million square meters with almost half a million square meters occupied by buildings. DMU is one of the largest and best maritime universities and is the only key maritime institution under the Ministry of Communications, People’s Republic of China.

Established more than a century ago, the university was designed to develop in students “a steadfast, rigorous, diligent, and pioneering spirit”. Regarding “Scientific Navigation” as its educational feature and through years of hard work and development, the university today enjoys a high reputation internationally as an excellent center of maritime education and training as recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The University has an international vision regarding academic cooperation and exchange. Since 1979, DMU has established cooperative relations with more than 20 international renowned maritime institutions, which include those in Russia, USA, Japan, Great Britain, Korea, Australia, Sweden, Egypt and Vietnam. The academic relationships with these sister universities are maintained through mutual visits, faculty staff and student exchanges, joint programs and joint research projects. In March 2005, the first joint MSc Program in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management was successfully inaugurated at DMU. This further enhances the University’s level of international academic cooperation. The University has established long-term cooperative relationships with international organizations and institutions, including the IMO, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), the Association of the Maritime Education and Training Institutes in Asia Pacific (AMETIAP), the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), Asia-Pacific Economics Cooperation (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the International Shipping Federation (ISF), the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), as well as some world famous shipping companies.
