Program Description

The graduate programs at Clemson University build on the rich experiences and expertise of faculty and students to provide an educational environment in which both groups share in research, exploration and inquiry. The result of this synergy is impact — on our community and beyond.

Our online Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) in Administration and Supervision programs are for experienced educators who want to learn how to serve students and communities collaboratively and to acquire the necessary skills to solve the complex problems facing schools today. The M.Ed. and Ed.S. programs combine the educational excellence that Clemson University is known for with the flexibility that many educators need. The programs enable students to earn an advanced degree in educational leadership. The Ed.S. is a post-Master’s degree and is appropriate for people who already have a Master's degree. Our graduates become principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, curriculum specialists, and serve in a wide variety of building-level and district-level leadership roles. New cohorts begin every summer and fall. The GRE is no longer required for admission.

The MEd offers three degree options, each of which consists of 36 credit hours.

Option 1: MEd with South Carolina building-level certification

For teachers holding a valid South Carolina teachers’ license, the certification pathway includes a 30-hour core and two internships and leads to either elementary or secondary building-level administrative certification.

Option 2: MEd with potential for out-of-state building-level certification*

Educators teaching under a certificate from a state other than South Carolina may be able to apply for certification in their own state by completing Clemson’s 30-hour core and transferring in six internship credit hours from another accredited program.

  • Clemson’s MEd is fully accredited in South Carolina. However, educators interested in receiving certification in another state are responsible for consulting with their state education agencies to determine their specific certification requirements.

    Option 3: MEd

Those desiring an educational leadership degree without certification may take the 30-hour core and add two graduate-level electives. Students may choose from a range of electives from across Clemson’s College of Education. These courses are taught online and may lead to additional certification in areas such as athletic leadership, human resource development, online instructional design, literacy, STEAM, and other areas.

About the School

Clemson University’s College of Education is a transformative leader in systematically improving education, beginning at birth. We train teachers, counselors and leaders for P-12 schools; prepare counselors to serve in communities; train student affairs practitioners, administrators and faculty to serve in higher education; and prepare training and development specialists for business and industry. But we do even more. We engage tomorrow’s educators in high-quality research and professional learning that will help them make a difference in the world.

The College of Education is dedicated to enhancing the education and development of all students, particularly those in underserved communities. We not only shape the lives of individuals; we also help transform families and communities. We see a significant role for our college in the economic development of our state and nation, and we embrace Clemson’s land-grant mission to better the lives of South Carolina’s citizens.

The College of Education includes three academic departments - Education and Human Development; Educational and Organizational Leadership Development; and Teaching and Learning - and the Eugene T. Moore School of Education, home to nationally renowned classroom and clinical training for pre-service teachers, professional mentoring of early-career teachers, and cutting-edge continuing education for in-service teachers. The school is named for the late Eugene T. Moore, a 1949 graduate of Clemson University who committed his adult life to education as a teacher, coach and principal in Florence County, S.C. In 2002, Darla Moore, daughter of Eugene T. Moore, and Richard Rainwater gave a $10 million gift to Clemson to name the school in her father's honor.

The candidate performance in the College of Education is strong, and we are committed to our conceptual framework. We are nationally accredited by the state of South Carolina, NCATE (recently merged with TEAC to become CAEP), and CACREP. Our teacher preparation programs, literacy, and principal and superintendency educational leadership programs are nationally recognized by their specialized professional association standards.

We embrace a commitment to a diverse faculty, staff and student body and provide all with diverse experiences within our programs. Housed in the College of Education is the nationally acclaimed Call Me MISTER® program, as well as the Charles H. Houston Center for the Study of Black Experience in Education. We also house the National Dropout Prevention Center/Network and the Reading Recovery® and Early Literacy Training Center for South Carolina.
