Program Description

The Sociology Department aims to understand the social changes taking place throughout the world and relate them to the developments in the contemporary United States. The curriculum allows students to acquire skills to see the social world from a critical perspective. Students also develop analytical tools to understand political life, social movements, social conflicts, and issues of social justice with an emphasis on organized, socioeconomic, racialized, and gendered inequalities from national and global perspectives.

Internships, Research Opportunities, and More

Sociology majors have the opportunity to earn honors and/or conduct independent research or community projects in the area of their interest with a chosen faculty member.

Exceptional students can accelerate their education and complete both the BA and MA in five years. This offers the benefit of an MA degree, which can be particularly valuable for students planning a career in public service and the nonprofit sector, as well as for those who want to strengthen their skills and knowledge in preparation for Ph.D. program applications.

Student clubs applicable to the sociology major include Peace Action and Voices against Violence.
