Comparative literature is the study of interrelationships among literary texts, themes, periods, theories, and genres without specific regard for national or linguistic boundaries. Beloit’s comparative literature major draws on the college’s strong offerings in modern languages, classics, English, and international studies.
Comparative literature students often supplement their majors by studying languages at Beloit and overseas and taking part in college-wide events like the International Student Symposium and other literary events that emphasize world literature.
The major in comparative literature rests on the premise that responsible criticism of literature requires a thorough knowledge of a language plus its literary and intellectual tradition and a careful study of at least one other literature composed in a different language, place, or time.
Comparative literature majors take a core course in literary methods and literary theory. With guidance from their advisor, they choose an appropriate selection of seven classical and world literature courses.
For more than 50 years, Beloiters have used the world around us as a classroom. Beloit College engages the intelligence, imagination, and curiosity of its students, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives marked by high achievement, personal responsibility, and public contribution in a diverse society. Our emphasis on international and interdisciplinary perspectives, the integration of knowledge with experience, and close collaboration among peers, professors, and staff equips our students to approach the world's complex problems ethically and thoughtfully.
We believe people learn best by doing. Across our 50+ majors, innovative programs, and campus resources, Beloit makes sure students have every opportunity to build strong resumes and contribute to our wider community.
Embedded in every experience at Beloit are opportunities for students to be effective communicators, creative problem solvers, productive collaborators, and intellectually and professionally agile.
Beloit's close-knit community means open-door policies, more mentors than mascots, support for people of diverse backgrounds, traditions that run deep, and unexpected connections with people and places beyond campus.
