Our Master of Health Science in Medical Lab Science will prepare you for a career in a clinical lab that makes an impact. This full-time program prepares you to change careers and be a leader in the lab in just two years.
If you are considering a career in medical laboratory science, you have made a great choice. It is a growing, rewarding profession, both financially and personally. Our entry-level Master’s in MLS will prepare you for practice and advancement in the medical lab setting. The MLS program is an 80-credit hour program that one can complete as a full-time student in 2 years with summer classes. Our program starts each year in August and includes 15 weeks (600 hours) of a clinical internship at one or more of our affiliated Louisville-area hospitals. Thanks in part to this practical clinical experience, our graduate employment rate is 100%. Our dedicated faculty provide you with the individual attention needed to succeed in your course work and your new career.
Medical Laboratory Scientists (formerly Clinical Laboratory Scientists or Medical Technologists) provide the science that supports healthcare. Most diagnostic and therapeutic medical decisions are based on laboratory test results generated by a Medical Laboratory Scientist. They apply skill and instrumentation to analyze blood cells and body fluids, identify disease-causing bacteria and viruses, and perform testing before transfusions and transplantation.
MLS graduates are employed primarily in hospital laboratories and enjoy career opportunities in biomedical research, forensics, biotechnology, toxicology, health care administration, pharmaceuticals, and other industries. An MLS degree also provides excellent preparation for medical, dental, or graduate school.
Our clinical affiliates include Baptist Hospital, Louisville KY; Clark Memorial Hospital, Jeffersonville, IN; Floyd Memorial Hospital, New Albany, IN; Jewish Hospital, Louisville KY; Norton Hospital, Louisville KY; University of Louisville Hospital, Louisville KY; and Veterans Administration Hospital, Louisville KY.

Professional education courses, field-based experiences in the schools, and a strong liberal arts background prepare students to meet the challenges of teaching diverse learners. The School of Education’s outstanding programs give our students an invaluable advantage in reaching professional career goals.
The School of Education uses a variety of materials and technology in the everyday classroom. Students get hands-on experience with technology used in public schools, standardized and diagnostic tests, and real-life examples of classroom techniques and materials. Classrooms are equipped with SmartBoard Technology and iPads, allowing students to be more interactive with information from the Internet, classroom presentations, and teaching materials.
The faculty in the School of Education believe that learning to be an effective teacher happens through an exploration of both theory and practice. Therefore, teacher candidates begin observation and fieldwork in the first semester of their freshman year and continue this every semester of their four years. On average, Bellarmine students obtain 30 hours of fieldwork experience each semester. In the fall semester of senior year, candidates complete a semester-long student teaching experience. This intensive professional semester enables candidates to refine the teaching skills that will prepare them for a rewarding career.
Graduates of the education program find employment in elementary, middle, and secondary education in public and private schools. Bellarmine teachers are always in high demand.
