Bellarmine’s M.Ed. in Higher Education Leadership and Social Justice is a 30-hour, fully online master’s program that provides students with the breadth of knowledge and professional experiences to lead and serve in a variety of entry and mid-level positions in higher education.
Our curriculum in higher education theory and social justice principles addresses the professional standards, skills, and personal development necessary to work and lead in higher education.
Career Prospects
The degree prepares students to engage and direct student learning through professional positions in student life, academic affairs, athletics, and many administrative positions across the campus in a variety of higher education settings. That includes traditional undergraduate and graduate colleges and universities, community colleges, for-profit institutions, online higher educational institutions, and professional undergraduate and graduate settings. The degree also prepares students to work in other functional areas in higher education, such as advancement and business, and finance.
The concerned and caring faculty and small community atmosphere make Bellarmine’s School of Education a wise choice for a successful academic career. Professional education courses, field-based experiences in the schools, and a strong liberal arts background prepare students to meet the challenges of teaching diverse learners. The School of Education’s outstanding programs give our students an invaluable advantage in reaching professional career goals.
The School of Education uses a variety of materials and technology in the everyday classroom. Students get hands-on experience with technology used in public schools, standardized and diagnostic tests, and real-life examples of classroom techniques and materials. Classrooms are equipped with SmartBoard Technology and iPads, allowing students to be more interactive with information from the Internet, classroom presentations, and teaching materials.
The faculty in the School of Education believe that learning to be an effective teacher happens through an exploration of both theory and practice. Therefore, teacher candidates begin observation and fieldwork in the first semester of their freshman year and continue this every semester of their four years. On average, Bellarmine students obtain 30 hours of fieldwork experience each semester. In the fall semester of senior year, candidates complete a semester-long student teaching experience. This intensive professional semester enables candidates to refine the teaching skills that will prepare them for a rewarding career.
Graduates of the education program find employment in elementary, middle, and secondary education in public and private schools. Bellarmine teachers are always in high demand.
