The Baccalaureate Program of Criminal Justice Studies is the study of the structure, functions and decision-making processes of the police, courts and correctional agencies involved in the control and management of criminal offenders. The discipline examines the causes and patterns of criminal behavior and the role of the law in regulating both crime and the operation of the criminal justice system. Furthermore, the program provides students with the opportunity to gain necessary skills in the area of program development and evaluation as well as planning and research within the field of criminal justice.
The Baccalaureate Degree in CJS will serve the following types of students:
Those seeking a four-year degree as a prerequisite for entry into the criminal justice field;
Those currently in service in the criminal justice system who seek to broaden their skills and obtain job-related knowledge and expertise, and
Those currently in the criminal justice system who seek to specialize and/or work in some other area of the system.
For 140 years, Bacone College has served as more than another building of higher education. Founded as Indian University in 1880, the school began classes in “Indian Territory” well before Oklahoma was formed.
Today, five Oklahoma Tribes charter Bacone College. They are the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians of Oklahoma, Osage Nation, Otoe-Missouria Tribe, Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes, and Kiowa Tribe.
Bacone College was not formed as an “ivory tower” escape from the world. Instead, it was planted in the midst of upheaval and conflict. Bacone was founded to inspire students to rise above the injustices of their day.
Though Bacone College is a historically Native American serving college and maintains that portion of its mission, our student body includes women and men from diverse backgrounds: Tribal, Hispanic, African-American, and Anglo. Today Bacone College is moving away from private-college status toward its goal to become a public Tribal College.
Bacone was founded to equip students to not just enter the world — but to help them transform their world. Our students still are given the knowledge, skills, and abilities to serve as successful leaders – now in the 21st Century. Join us!
