About

This qualification reflects the job roles of workers in the accounting industry, including BAS Agents and contracts bookkeepers; and of those employees performing bookkeeping tasks for organisations in a range of industries. It includes preparing and lodging business and instalment activity statements, and providing advice or dealing with the Commissioner on behalf of a taxpayer in relation to activity statements. Individuals in these roles apply theoretical and specialist knowledge and skills to work autonomously and exercise judgement in completing routine and non-routine activities.

Course accreditation

This course is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Entry requirements

There are no formal pre-requisites in the training package for course entry, however, ACSE sets a number of its own entry requirements.

There are a number of entry pathways for this qualification, include\ng after completing:

  • FNS30115 Certificate III in Financial Services
  • FNS30317 Certificate III in Accounts Administration

Clients must demonstrate Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills in line with AQF qualification level demands and ACSF skill level. Each client will undergo an LLN assessment during the application process.

Learning (ACSF Level 4), reading (ACSF Level 3), writing (ACSF Level 3), oral communication (ACSF Level 3) and numeracy (ACSF Level 4) are desirable to participate in the course. ACSE administers an LLN test based on the desirable ACSF levels.

Resource required

Clients must also have access to:

  • A PC or equivalent capable of processing and operating MYOB
  • Internet connection
  • A copy of MYOB and MS Office with MS Excel. Preferably MS Office 2010 or later and Windows 10 at a minimum.

Course duration

  • The duration of the course is 12 months self-paced, including all learning and assessment activities. However, it is anticipated that the course length will vary with regard to individual client’s level of expertise and time dedicated to studying. As a guide, given the total number of units in the program is 13, students should aim to complete and be assessed in 1 unit per month. To do this, students will be required to study at least 9 hours a week or 36 hours a month.

Assessment

To successfully complete the course, you will be required to submit a range of formative and summative assessment items at pre-determined intervals where possible. These include:

  • Underpinning Knowledge reading and written responses
  • Case study reading and written responses
  • Journal and Ledger entry workbooks
  • Practical projects
  • Demonstration or observation (via video submission or digital media, mainly for RPL applicants)
  • Presentation (via video submission as an alternative assessment mechanism)

Assessment is used to provide candidates with feedback on their progress and to measure their skills and knowledge against the training qualification requirements.

Assessment timelines will be provided on enrolment as part of your enrolment information package.

Training award

Students who obtain a competent result for all 8 core units and any 5 electives will receive FNS40217 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping;

or

Students who do not obtain a competent result in the 8 core units and any 5 electives will receive a Statement of Attainment toward FNS40217Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping only

Career pathways

The primary pathway from this qualification is a learning pathway into the FNS50217 Diploma of Accounting https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/FNS50217.

Completing FNS40217 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping gives the candidate the following 6 units:

  • FNSACC311 Process financial transactions and extract interim reports
  • FNSACC312 Administer subsidiary accounts and ledgers
  • FNSACC408 Work effectively in the accounting and bookkeeping industry
  • FNSACC416 Set up and operate a computerised accounting system
  • FNSTPB401 Complete business activity and instalment activity statements
  • FNSTPB402 Establish and maintain payroll systems;

These units form the FNSSS00014 Accounting Principles Skill Set, which is also a pre-requisite for entry into the FNS50217 Diploma of Accounting. The candidate will receive Credit Transfer for these 6 units on admission to FNS50217 Diploma of Accounting
