Program Description

A founding fellow in OMFS-SA is an ACVS Diplomate who has obtained additional training and experience or has demonstrated expertise in OMFS, beyond surgery residency training and devotes a major portion of their professional effort prevention diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of OMFS-SA patients. The founding fellow shows substantial programmatic effort in this field, whether in academic or private speciality practice.

ACVS recognizes that many of its members have achieved a level of expertise in a specific field or may wish to achieve a level of expertise. This expertise allows ACVS Diplomates to interact with other surgeons, related non-surgical experts, and the lay community in such a way as to provide a leadership role in matters of surgery in their focused field.

In order to fulfil this membership need, ACVS established ACVS Fellowship Programs.

Volunteering to serve on the fellowship oversight committees

The fellowship oversight committee (FOC) is responsible for monitoring the fellowship program and providing status reports to the Fellowship Committee on training centres, training candidates, and program modification requests. Serving on the fellowship oversight committee is a three-year term.

About the School

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) is the speciality board that sets the standards for advanced professionalism in veterinary surgery. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recognized veterinary speciality organization™ for veterinarians' certification in large animal surgery and small animal surgery. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons undergoes a comprehensive evaluation by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS), a committee of the American Veterinary Medical Association, every three years to ensure that we are maintaining the required standards for our certification process.

Following the 2020 certification examination, The American College of Veterinary Surgeons includes more than 2,200 Diplomates. Approximately 70 veterinarians earn their Diplomate credentials every year. More than 65 per cent of the college's Diplomates operate in private and speciality practices that accept referral basis cases from primary care practitioners. The remainder is primarily employed by academic institutions and industry where they teach, conduct research, practice in teaching hospitals, and develop new products and treatments that improve the quality of veterinary and human health care.

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons defines surgical excellence standards for the profession, promotes veterinary surgery advancements, and provides the latest in surgical educational programs. By fostering the highest standards of excellence in veterinary surgery, the college helps the veterinary profession achieve its goals of providing outstanding service to the public and care for animals.

The missionof the American College of Veterinary Surgeons is to advance the art and science of surgery and promote excellence in animal health care through research, education, and service to the public.
