“We are stardust brought to life, then empowered by the universe to figure itself out—and we have only just begun.” ― Neil deGrasse Tyson
Physics and astronomy are disciplines that have given us the tools to stretch the human understanding of the universe, from the building blocks of matter to the structure and evolution of the most distant galaxies.
Physics and astronomy courses at Agnes Scott cover subjects as common as gravity and electricity and as unusual as quantum mechanics, relativity, and dark matter. Astronomy courses emphasize both theory and observation, including using the Delafield Planetarium, individual telescopes, and other modern observing and image processing equipment in the Bradley Observatory. In addition, students regularly make observations using national astronomy facilities, like the Jansky Very Large Array, as well as northern and southern hemisphere 1-meter class telescopes through the college’s membership in the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA.)
Since 1889, Agnes Scott College has empowered students to fulfil their potential through an innovative liberal arts education. We believe in big questions, global perspectives, and leading change. This is a community where the dreamers, the intellectually curious, and the socially engaged fulfil their potential.
Discover why Agnes Scott is one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation. This is a home for those who think college should be transformative. Our goal is to open doors for talented students and help them grow as individuals, scholars, professionals and citizens of the world.
Academic Innovation
Our undergraduate experience is defined by SUMMIT, our approach to reinventing the liberal arts education. Every student completes a core curriculum focused on global learning, leadership development, professional success and digital literacy, guided by their own Board of Advisors. Our academic offerings include programs in pre-law and pre-medicine and dual-degree programs in computer science, engineering and nursing.
Our growing number of graduate and post-baccalaureate programs are interdisciplinary, cutting-edge, and designed for professional and academic success. Agnes Scott’s graduate and post-bacc students are driven by curiosity and purpose and are supported by the college’s award-winning faculty.
