Why choose Herts?

  • Employment prospects : Graduates have secured promotions with their current employer. Some venture into research, advisory, and policy-making roles.
  • Industry connections : Benefit from our strong partnerships with over 300 schools and training providers across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Cambridgeshire.

About the course

The programme supports you in developing your knowledge and understanding of issues and practices through enquiry and research. The programme provides a range of module choices, but you are encouraged to bring your own ideas and focus on your own particular professional interests. This award is gained through taking an educational leadership focus for 50% of the study, including the Dissertation.

This award enables experienced professionals to build upon their interests and experience in educational leadership. Less experienced professionals are supported in developing their knowledge of issues relating to educational leadership.

Applicants must have substantial experience of practice in educational settings. Less experienced applicants must have an education qualification.

Why choose this course?

The MA Educational Leadership award is designed for professionals who want to enhance their careers through exploring the leadership of learning in their own context. We will encourage students to challenge traditional notions of 'leaders' and 'leadership' and explore relational, collaborative and democratic leadership models.

Through this programme you will:

  • Develop and deepen your knowledge and understanding of issues relating to education practice through critical reflection, analysis and enquiry
  • Develop your ability to critically analyse educational theory and how it links to practice
  • Become a member of a supportive learning community and learn from professionals from a range of educational settings
  • Become a successful practitioner-researcher

Prepare to succeed

Show employers what you’re made of. We’re big on placements – and for good reason. Research tells us that over 70% of employers prefer students with work experience. That’s because placements aren’t just an excellent way to put what you’ve learnt into practice, they also show employers what you’re like as a person – with all those attributes like ambition, teamwork and a can-do attitude. To make sure our students get that work experience advantage, we’ve developed strong links with businesses and organisations here and internationally. These have allowed us to build valuable placement opportunities, from short-term experience to full-year paid placements, into many of our courses. What’s more, you won’t have to pay fees during the year you’re on placement.

Passport to success

Many students at Hertfordshire have the chance to study or work overseas – for a semester, a summer or even a whole year. Studying or working abroad is a great way to immerse yourself in a new culture, broaden your horizons and create many unforgettable memories. We have partnerships with many universities across the world, including in the USA, Canada, Latin America, Africa, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, and across Europe. The cost of living in many countries is lower than in the UK and you’ll still be eligible for any grants or loans you’d get if you were studying here. Most students also pay no tuition fees during the year away and may be eligible for one of our scholarships to help with living and travelling costs.

Learn from the best

We like to think our teaching is a little different. Not only are our academics experts in their respective fields, but everything they teach is shaped by businesses and industry, giving you the subject-specific and transferable skills for an exciting career. Alongside your core subject, you’ll also be able to pick up other qualifications to help you stand out to employers.
