If you are interested in accountancy and finance and are aiming to have a career in this field, then this could be the course for you. The main aims of the course are to develop knowledge and understanding of financial management and accounting practices, to be able to apply these skills in different business and management contexts, and for these evaluative skills to be consistent with the needs of employers and the profession. This course also gives exemptions from the ACCA qualifications papers F1-F9 for successful graduates.
Students will have the opportunity to develop skills relating to a range of accounting and finance areas. By the end of the course, students will have developed analytical and evaluative skills and the ability to apply them in different business and management contexts. Students will also have developed knowledge and understanding of current accounting and finance theories and practice that will enhance their effectiveness in the field of accounting and finance.
The BSc (Hons) Finance and Accounting is delivered largely through combined lectures/seminars, workshops and tutorial sessions. The course is delivered on a full-time basis over three days at the St Johns Centre. The course is a two year one (covering levels 5 and 6) with entry onto level 5 for those holding an AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Level 4 qualification (or equivalent).
The regulatory and economic environment
This module aims to give students an understanding of the business and economic environment for commercial organisations. The module also looks at the regulatory framework of the accountancy profession and the role of corporate governance.
Company law
The main aim of this module is to enable students to acquire a sound knowledge of the legal framework relating to companies. On completion of this module, students will have had the opportunity to deal effectively with a wide variety of legal materials and to apply legal rules in the context of problem-solving.
Organisational behaviour
This module provides a wide-ranging analysis and understanding of the behaviour of people at work. On completion of this module, students should be able to apply knowledge of organisational theory to the real world of work and organisations.
Financial and management information systems
This module aims to enable students to select, describe and apply a variety of alternative costing and management accounting techniques. At the end of this module, students should be able to describe and evaluate the influence of external financial reporting on the costing practices of an organisation.
Quantitative and statistical analysis
This module aims to introduce students to statistical techniques that are useful for decision-making. On completion of this module students should be able to effectively interpret statistical analysis output.
Financial accounting
The main aim of this module is for students to be able to apply their understanding of accounting techniques in the preparation and interpretation of financial reports. On completion of this module students should be able to appraise and apply specific accounting concepts to practical work place scenarios.
Business finance
The main aim of this module is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the role of the Financial manager within an organisation, and also the external financial environment in which organisations operate. On completion of the module, students should be able to understand what is needed for efficient financial management.
Advanced financial accounting and accounting theory
This module aims to extend students ability to prepare, analyse, evaluate and report on company financial statements in both the UK and internationally. By the end of the module students should be able to evaluate current practice and thinking in both UK and international corporate reporting.
Management accounting for control
This module aims to explore the role and nature of modern management accounting. Students completing this module should be able to select and apply appropriate techniques, and be able to evaluate the validity and limitations of such approaches.
The professional accountant
This module looks at the nature and scope of the accountant as a professional. It explores current ethical and professionalism issues in accountancy.
Business taxation
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the nature and operation of core areas of taxation related to businesses and their employees. By the end of this module students should be able to prepare a variety of taxation computations relating to companies, partnerships, sole traders and employees.
Audit Framework
This module looks at the audit process and its application in the context of the external regulatory framework. On completion of this module students should be able to fully understand and evaluate the audit process.
The assessments are submitted over four assessment periods throughout the year. A range of assessment methods is used, and examples of assessments are assignments, individual reports and exams. Exams are a strong feature of this course as professional body exemptions are available.Each module has either two or three assessments.
