Admission information

Successful freshman applicants in this major will have earned outstanding grades in calculus and physics, and performed exceptionally well on the Math section of the SAT and/or ACT.

After Graduation

Your college decision isn't really about the next four years. We get it. It’s about what doors are opened by your degree and whether those opportunities are what you had envisioned for yourself. Nearly 95% of SBU grads go to professional or graduate school. Here's a snapshot of what life after graduation looks like for some of them.

Computer Engineering

Get ready for hands-on experience, designing and creating products like GPS navigation systems, cell phones, or microprocessors. You'll work on computer and data processing equipment, which frequently encompass both hardware and software. Many of our courses have laboratory components where you'll be exposed to experiential learning.

Areas of study:

  • Engineering Sciences
  • Engineering Design
  • Discrete Mathematics and Probability/Statistics
  • Computer Science

Electrical Engineering

In our Electrical Engineering major, you'll study everything from electronic circuits and control systems to robotics and automation. Our ABET-accredited program incorporates laboratory components to many courses, so you'll have many hands-on experiences. You'll design, develop, and test systems and circuits, employ computers to analyze, model, and understand important concepts, and learn to solve engineering problems.

Areas of study:

  • General Electrical Engineering
  • Microelectronics
  • Telecommunications

Mathematics

Mathematics is an essential element in a wide range of human activities. It is the language of the physical sciences, and as such is an indispensable tool in the formulation of the laws of nature. In the social and biological sciences, it plays an increasingly important role in modeling complicated, large-scale phenomena. In addition, mathematics has an aesthetic side: awareness of the possibility of elegance and beauty in mathematical arguments has been a significant feature of human culture throughout history. The undergraduate course offerings in Mathematics allow students to set up individualized programs of study consistent with their academic interests and career plans. Students should consider majoring in Mathematics even if they do not plan to become mathematicians or teachers of mathematics. The training in abstract reasoning and problem-solving is an excellent foundation for many different careers, such as law, graduate health professions, and business. Completion of a major in Mathematics points to a thinking person.

Areas of study:

  • Single- and Multi-Variable Calculus
  • Language and Logic of Mathematics
  • Advanced Linear Algebra
  • Abstract Algebra
