The Department of Mathematics offers degrees tailored to individual student needs. At the undergraduate level, we offer a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree and a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) degree.
A Bachelor of Science prepares students for a career in mathematics or to pursue a graduate degree in mathematics. Within the BS degree, we also offer an optional emphasis in Actuarial Science. The Actuarial Emphasis provides Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) credit and prepares students to sit for the first two actuarial exams.
A Minor in Mathematics is available which can be adapted to a variety of business or STEM disciplines. In addition, we offer a Minor in Mathematics (Teaching Grades 5-8) which, in conjunction with any BSEd degree, prepares students for licensure at the Late Childhood through Early Adolescence (middle school) level.
The Department of Mathematics offers small class sizes, and our programs are adaptable to students’ needs and interests.
The department fosters unique opportunities for student involvement by encouraging student participation in the Math Club/Mathematical Association of America Student Chapter, Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society, Actuarial Club, Mo-Kan Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In addition, the department hosts a problem-solving group and provides opportunities for one-on-one research with faculty members.
The faculty members within the department have expertise in a broad area of mathematics to support research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The department produces graduates that are well prepared and ready to pursue graduate school or careers in mathematics. We boast nearly 100 percent job placement and our graduates are exceptionally successful in graduate school.
The Department of Mathematics maintains relationships with our graduates and actuarial employers to foster internship opportunities for students pursuing the actuarial emphasis.
The department encourages student research at all levels by providing one-on-one research opportunities with faculty members and providing travel support for students to attend and present research at a variety of mathematics conferences.

This new city needed teachers. It was the early 1900s. Coal mining, brick manufacturing, and various heavy industries had become economic engines in Pittsburg. Opportunities abound for those ready to work. But first, they needed to learn. They needed teachers. The Kansas State Manual Training Normal School Auxiliary opened in September 1903. One building, 54 students. This new school would prepare teachers in curriculum areas vital to success and prosperity in the hands-on, industrial age.
More than a century later, that mission remains at the core of Pittsburg State University. By providing interactive, engaging courses throughout four different colleges, Pitt State transforms the lives of our students, our community, and the entire Southeast Kansas region.
