The joint master's programme in Innovative Sustainable Energy Engineering focuses on energy systems designs with economically and environmentally sustainable technologies. Students are awarded degrees from two leading Nordic universities and explore the unique energy engineering expertise of these universities through a specialisation track. Graduates know practices, policies and technologies to supply energy at the least financial, environmental and social cost.
The master's programme in Innovative Sustainable Energy Engineering provides state-of-the-art education in the fields of sustainable energy like new power generation, solar energy, biomass energy, wind power and energy utilisation in the built environment by means of economically and environmentally sustainable systems and technologies.
The term sustainable energy engineering comprises a wide array of practices, policies and technologies (conventional, renewable and alternative) aimed at providing energy at the lowest possible economic, environmental and social cost. Emphasis is placed on dealing with energy engineering tasks with due consideration of related technical, environmental and socio-economic issues.
Strong emphasis is also put on the innovative and entrepreneurial aspects of the energy society, especially with regard to how existing and new efficiency-improving innovations can be brought to market in different countries. The innovative aspects of the programme are related to both the advanced renewable energy concept in the Nordic countries as well as new businesses in the energy sector.
Students gain expertise in project design, implementation, operation and maintenance, as well as the crucial phases on policy generation. The studies also include research-oriented, in-depth training from the energy sector.
This is a two year programme (120 ECTS credits) given in English. Graduates are awarded the degree of Master of Science from KTH and the equivalent degree from the other attended university. The programme is given mainly at KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Industrial Engineering and Management (at KTH).
After successfully completing the course work, each student is assigned an individual degree project, on which they typically work over five to six months. The project may be carried out either in an academic environment (university, research institute, or equivalent) or in an industrial setting (power plant, energy consulting agency, or other industry/business). Thesis projects may or may not be linked to ongoing research activities at one or more of the partner universities.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is one of Europe’s leading technical universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers, and faculty from around the world dedicated to advancing knowledge.
KTH is a university with a rich history of pioneering ideas and innovation that dates back to 1827. For nearly 200 years KTH has educated students who have gone on to influence our present and make the technological advances that define modern society. Still today, KTH shapes the talents that will find the solutions for tomorrow’s challenges.
KTH is working with industry and society in the pursuit of sustainable solutions to some of humanity’s most significant challenges: climate change, future energy supply, urbanisation, and quality of life for the rapidly-growing elderly population. We are addressing these with world-leading, high-impact research and education in natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as in architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history, and philosophy. Almost two-thirds of the SEK 4 billion turnovers are related to research.
Basic and applied research is performed side-by-side at KTH and interdisciplinary research is conducted in parallel with work in specific fields.
KTH maintains close relationships with an expanding network of international companies and the industrial community in a number of fields, and working and studying here provides access to this network.
The latest career report shows that 94 percent of those who graduated from KTH 2010-2012 have been employed since they finished their degree and a remaining 6 percent have gone on to Ph.D. studies. Of the international student population, 30 percent go on to Ph.D. studies at KTH or other renowned universities. 32 percent of KTH Alumni leave Sweden for work or studies abroad. 13 percent lead others in their work, and 13 percent have already received their first managerial position.
