In 1978, Hunan University created a computer science program for undergraduates and formed a computer science teaching lab. In May 1981, Hunan University announced the establishment of its Computer Science Department. In 2001, two schools were formed. School of Computer and Communication was formed in October and School of Software was formed in December. In 2010, these two schools merged and became the College of Information Science and Engineering today.
The college now has 37 full professors and 74 associate professors, including national "Thousand Talents Plan" scientists and Yangtze River Scholars. More than 60% faculty members have Ph.D. degree.
The College currently has 1 member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 Cheung Kong Scholar, 1 chair professor, 2 of Talent Project for the New Century of the Ministry of Education, 17 visiting and part-time professors, and 86 full-time professors, most of whom are holders of doctoral degrees. Since 2002, the college has been undertaking the teaching work, and 70% of them have an overseas study or work experience. So far, the college has accepted more than 100 foreign students every year for master's and doctoral degree, and some graduates are working for large-scale Chinese enterprises and companies.
