Beschreibung des Programms

A 6-year degree program in Medicine and Surgery, held in English, is run by Humanitas University in partnership with Politecnico di Milano.

Precision medicine, big data, A.I., nanotechnologies, surgical robots, 3D printing, and bio-prosthesis: this degree program will enable a doctor to treat patients through the management of technological developments in medicine and related sectors, including disease prevention and treatment, patient rehabilitation and the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic solutions.

The degree program aims to train professionals who will be able to apply medical and technological know-how as a means of providing innovative and quality medicine. In a global context of increasing complexity, technological innovation makes it possible to improve the quality of life in a sustainable way, innovating care and humanizing the doctor-patient relationship.

The six-year year degree program in Medicine and Surgery taught in English, is organized by Humanitas University in partnership with Politecnico di Milano. The program strongly focusses on enhancing the medical skills of a doctor through the integration and acquisition of the basic competencies and approaches relevant to Biomedical Engineering.

The integrated six-year training program will allow you to obtain additional ECTS and be awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, in addition to an MD in Medicine.

The degree program will provide:

a biomedical engineering approach to basic science disciplines (e.g. chemistry, physics, statistics, computer science). the acquisition of competences to deal with precision medicine and regenerative medicine . competencies to address complex issues concerning the applications of technology and information analytics to medicine through the integration of pre-clinical and clinical education with basic engineering subjects (such as mathematical analysis, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanics, etc.). a multi-disciplinary approach by introducing basic biomedical engineering methodologies and technologies into medical training to foster integration between the two disciplines. an innovative approach to doctor-patient interaction that maximizes the potential of technologies and intelligent systems for the optimization of machine-patient interaction and for the customization of therapies and continuity of care.

On successfully completing the degree program you will :

  • have gained in-depth knowledge of advanced medical technologies and be able to design personalized therapies through the use of complex technological systems for clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • be able to optimize therapeutic outcomes based on the potential of data analytics and machine learning techniques , the use of new materials and advanced therapeutic devices such as surgical robots, endo-prostheses, bio-printers, and 3D printing.
  • have opportunities to work in numerous medical fields, e.g. biomedical device design, biomedical technologies or in pharmaceutical industries.

The course is based on the didactic approach of Humanitas University and Politecnico di Milano adopt an educational approach that promote interactive methodologies.

Classes aim to encourage student engagement and interaction, with a strong focus on group work through data collection, data management and follow-up discussions with the teaching staff, as in the case of the flipped classroom approach.

Teaching and learning methods

Humanitas University and Politecnico di Milano adopt an educational approach that promotes interactive methodologies; these include research-based learning, problem-based learning, problem-solving, case methods, and skill-based portfolios to guarantee a solid integration between theoretical concepts acquired during teaching activities and practical training sessions, as well as the promotion of critical thinking. Classes aim to encourage student engagement and interaction, with a strong focus on group work through data collection, data management and follow-up discussions with the teaching staff, as in the case of the flipped classroom approach.

The Courses

All our courses are inspired by the concept of active learning, carefully balancing theory and practice to ensure that our students develop critical and autonomous thinking skills alongside specific professional competences.

Humanitas University prepares its students to thrive in the clinical and research areas in Italy or overseas. An international and stimulating environment frames all our courses at Humanitas University. We seek to support our students’ personal and professional growth and believe in nurturing a spirit of collaboration, curiosity, and responsibility.

Today Humanitas University hosts 1400 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Undergraduate students are divided into 4 courses:

180 per year for the MD in Medicine and Surgery (English); 60 per year for MEDTEC School (English); 140 per year for a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (Italian); 50 per year for a Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy (Italian).

Integration with Humanitas hospitals

Humanitas is the first Italian hospital to be quality-certified as an Academic Hospital by the Joint Commission International. It is one of the most technologically advanced European hospitals and internationally renowned for its research on immune system diseases. Humanitas has specialist units treating oncological, cardiovascular, neurological, orthopedic, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. It also has a top Eye Centre, an outstanding Fertility Centre, and a highly specialized Accident and Emergency department. Medical assistance, supported by the best professional knowledge and a multidisciplinary approach, is complemented by constant research activities aimed at improving and personalizing treatment. IRCCS Istituto Clinico Humanitas heads a group of hospitals in Italy, located in Milan, Bergamo, Castellanza, Turin, and Catania.

International dimension

Humanitas attracts young people from Italy and from all over the world and offers the opportunity to engage in a unique kind of education. It is an international hub for the training of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and researchers capable of dealing with future scientific, technological and social change. The close integration between the Hospital, the Research Laboratories, and the University creates the conditions for healthcare professionals to gain experience by working closely with patients and at the same time acquire the methodology and rigor that scientific research requires – a means to creating synergy between clinical and laboratory practice in an educational context.

Students have the chance to learn from PRofessors, Visiting Professors who include 3 Nobel price winners, and researches with proven international experience.

Moreover, students can live study experience abroad thanks to the international network with research centers and foreign medical Institutions.

An integrated approach for education and training

At Humanitas University, an integrated teaching approach ensures that our future doctors acquire theoretical knowledge alongside clinical skills. The multi-disciplinary teaching methods include problem-based and experience-based learning. The first approach encourages students to develop analytical and reflective skills required during clinical practice; the second focuses on independent research, decision making, and teamwork. Simulation also plays a fundamental role in medical training – it is the place where students can learn in a safe and controlled environment under the supervision of tutors, whose role is to facilitate the learning process as the objectives become progressively more challenging, ranging from history taking and procedural skills, to high-fidelity simulation of patient management in complex clinical scenarios.
