Beschreibung des Programms

Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of life. It is a rapidly evolving field that allows students to understand the underlying processes in living organisms. It deals with the structure and functions of cellular components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules. Biochemistry combines biology with organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and physical chemistry to elucidate the mechanisms by which living things obtain energy from food; the chemical basis of heredity; and biological changes related to the disease. Biochemistry integrates the sciences of molecular biology; immunochemistry; analytical biochemistry; structural biology; neurochemistry; bioinorganic, bioorganic, and biophysical chemistry. Biochemistry is applicable in pharmacology, toxicology, physiology, microbiology, and clinical chemistry.

The B.S. in Biochemistry is a carefully designed program that combines key topics in biological, chemical, and other sciences to provide the student with an educational experience leading to an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry. This degree program places Hampton University in a rather unique position in two respects: (1) we are among very few institutions that offer an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry; only a handful of other HBCUs offer this degree; and (2) the program provides a suitable medical/biomedical career path alternative for the large number of students who matriculate at HU with interests in health, biomedical and related careers. The American Chemical Society authorizes the department’s chair to certify graduating students who complete this curriculum.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The curriculum is designed to meet the guidelines of the American Chemical Society's certifiable baccalaureate degrees, including instruction in inorganic chemistry, chemical analysis and instrumental methods of analysis, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. Courses have been designed not only to meet accreditation requirements but also to allow students to develop a strong background in science. Therefore, appropriate courses are also required in cognate areas such as biology, physics, computer science, and mathematics.

Chemistry majors are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research with Hampton University faculty and efforts to include work experiences at other laboratories are ongoing. The department also encourages chemistry students to participate in professional organizations such as the American Chemical Society student affiliate, Beta Kappa Chi national scientific honor society, and the National Technical Association.

The department provides high-quality education in chemical principles appropriate to the needs of students from other disciplines and provides chemistry majors with a sound education in the fundamental areas of modern chemistry. A dedicated and highly trained faculty prepares students for advanced study in chemistry and other scientific disciplines by promoting academic achievement and providing state-of-the-art instrumentation.

Informationen über das Institut

Rich in history and tradition, Hampton University is a dynamic, progressive institution of higher education, providing a broad range of technical, liberal arts, and graduate degree programs. Hampton University is a private university accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees. In addition to being one of the top historically black universities in the world, Hampton University is a closely connected community of learners and educators, representing 35 territories and nations.

Hampton University is located on the east coast of the United States in the state of Virginia. The campus is located on a peninsula near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and is surrounded by water on three sides which gives it the nickname “Our home by the Sea”. The surrounding city of Hampton has many businesses, retail and residential areas, historical sites, and miles of waterfront and beaches. Attractions such as Fort Monroe, NASA Langley Research Center, and the Virginia Air and Space Center add to the splendor - and fun - of the HU campus. While Hampton University is primarily a liberal art and education university it also specializes in business, engineering, technology, nursing, pharmacy, and the sciences. Hampton University has the privilege of having the first and only NASA mission that is 100% led by an HBCU (Historically Black College & University). It is also the home of the largest and most advanced Proton Therapy Institute in the world.

Accreditation

Hampton University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award certificates and degrees at the associate, baccalaureate, master’s, education specialist, professional, and doctoral levels.

The University is also approved by the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV). The University holds membership in the Council of Graduate Schools, the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, and the American Council on Education.

In addition, Hampton University (its undergraduate and/or graduate colleges) is accredited or approved by other bodies.
