The objective of the international Master of Water and Wind Engineering is to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the general field of environmental fluid mechanics and then to provide them with the opportunity to specialize in one particular aspect.
Environmental fluid mechanics is indeed an important element of most large infrastructure projects (impact of wind on structures, transport and dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere, flooding of urban areas, erosion of our coastlines). The various predictions for the consequences of climate change all suggest that extreme events are likely to become more frequent and more intense. There is, therefore, a continuing need for highly-trained engineers, capable of understanding and modeling these phenomena in all their complexity .
In the second year of the program, students will have the possibility to specialize in one area of water and wind engineering, either by following a taught program offered by one of our partner institutions or through an internship in one of the partner laboratories.
This Master's program is constructed on the basis of long-standing research collaboration between several of the partners, and a shared desire to make the collective knowledge and experience that we have acquired available to engineering students as they begin to embark on their careers. A significant proportion of the teaching program is dedicated to laboratory work, giving students the opportunity to collaborate in small groups, working with a wide range of experimental installations and facilities. Much of the practical work is based on small group projects, to encourage collaborative work and to facilitate student integration. The international structure of the program is born out of a shared belief in the importance of including an international dimension in the training of tomorrow’s engineers.
École Centrale de Lyon is one of the top 10 engineering schools in France. There are more than 3,000 students from over 50 nationalities, in the engineering science degree, our Master's degrees, and our doctoral programs. Our educational programs are founded on the excellence of our research laboratories, with 6 CNRS-accredited laboratories, 2 international laboratories, 6 international research networks, and 10 joint laboratories with industrial partners.
Our mission: ‘To instill general engineers with a solid scientific and technical background along with a broad world view and the ability to adapt to changing and multi-cultural environments’. Our students will excel in the sciences. They will put them into practice through an open education approach (directed study in labs, practical work, study projects, skills-based approach, internships) and through the teaching of human and social sciences, which are essential for personal development and workplace life.
The energy to embark on new ventures, the strength to act boldly, and the courage and desire to always strive to go further guide our students in their journey to become curious engineers, trained in other fields, and active participants in their own futures.
This is made possible thanks to the many partnerships we have developed with schools and universities in France and abroad. ENISE, which became our institute’s first internal school, is also part of this openness. New opportunities arise every year: from architecture to management, from cooking to craftsmanship, and from pure research to medicine, students have many ways to expand their knowledge.
Businesses are involved at every level of education, ensuring that teaching is tailored as closely as possible to their expectations and to the scientific and societal challenges ahead.
In the wings, the lecturer-researchers and staff contribute to Ecole Centrale de Lyon’s transformation by bringing projects to life. This collaborative dynamic drives us to redesign the institute to offer our students an advantageous environment for these projects, meeting the highest international standards.
New spaces for education, meetings, and research, with an emphasis on intercultural exchanges, easier access to new technologies, and the preservation of our exceptional living environment are just some of the challenges to which we are rising.
