Master in performing music or composition
The master's program in performing music or composition at the Grieg Academy is an offer for instrumentalists, singers and composers in the genres of classical, jazz and traditional music. The program places emphasis on further developing the students' artistic profile, and strengthening the ability for academic reflection and independence.
The master's program has two parallel courses throughout the program: main instrument or composition and project work. The project work is divided into three sub-projects and provides an opportunity for in-depth study of one or more self-chosen topics within one's own executive or creative fields of interest. The project work will support the performing / creative work by helping to increase awareness of and to be able to reflect on musical issues. Great freedom is given in the choice of documentation forms in relation to the nature of the projects (oral or digital presentation form).
The teaching is given as individual guidance in the main instrument / project and in seminar form. The seminars emphasize an open, interactive discussion in the group and address issues related to working methods, use of sources and issues related to current topics in students' work.
Topics may include interpretation, performance practical questions, style understanding, work understanding / analysis, improvisation methods, aesthetics, instrumental technique, oral traditions, composer / performer collaboration, study of historical recordings, experimental exploration, cross-over projects and psychological or societal issues related to for musical performance and composition.
The master's program has an international student environment, and uses English as a language of communication in parts of the joint teaching. In addition to teaching from a highly qualified professional staff, national and international guests are invited to hold seminars and master classes.
The master's program facilitates exchange stays at a foreign institution and you can apply for financial support related to the project work and the master's exam concert.
Field of study Nordic folk music collaborates with the Royal Academy of Music (Stockholm), the South Danish Conservatory of Music (Esbjerg) and the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki) on a joint study called the Nordic Master in Folk Music (NoFo). Read more about NoFo here.
